This spring a breeding bird survey has been taking place in Golden Wood, four local ornithologists have been undertaking this. We have been carrying out similar surveys since 2000.
It has been a good Spring with a number of migrants arriving to breed or stopping off on passage. Here is the arrival list along with embarkation location:
Blackcap, breeding in wood , arriving from Iberia
Willow Warbler, breeding in wood , west Africa
Chiffchaff, breeding in wood , arriving from Mediterranean
Sedge Warbler, passage migrant, arriving from Africa
Grasshopper Warbler, passage migrant, arriving from north and west Africa
Firecrest, passage migrant arriving from southern Europe
Yellow Wagtail, passage migrant from south of the Sahara
Wheatear, passage migrant from Africa
The fact that we get so many bird-visitors is a reflection how healthy and attractive Golden Wood is.
